Historic Chamonix is the unofficial capital city of the Alps. At the foot of Mont Blanc - the highest mountain west of Russia and the third most visited natural site in the world - Chamonix has been firmly on the tourist map since the grand tours of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1924 it held the first ever Winter Olympics. Today it is a Mecca for skiers, boarders, mountaineers and party animals, as immortalised in Jonathan Trigell's novel CHAM. Every year Chamonix hosts a stage of the skiing World Cup; plus the World Freeride Tour (for both skiing and boarding) and the Winter Sessions music and snowsports festival. Chamonix is linked to Courmayeur in Italy via the Mont Blanc tunnel and Verbier in Switzerland via the Col des Montets (both resorts are included on the larger liftpass). Dual carriageway all the way into town means the road is almost never closed for snow and this combined with the rapid journey to Geneva airport makes it a perfect base for those who may have to occasionally return for UK commitments. Renowned for its off-piste terrain, Chamonix is perhaps not the best area for beginners, although in a season’s stay, no one will be a beginner for long…The Aiguille de Midi cable car, at 1,035m to 3,842m is the highest vertical ascent lift in the world and leads onto the famous 22km Vallee Blanche. A truly year round town, Chamonix is the perfect place for a long term move to the Alps.
Argentiere is about a ten minute drive from Chamonix, but has a cult following. Though it has more of a village feel, it still has several good bars and restaurants and it lies at the foot of the Grands Montets ski area, which many regard as the best spot to ride in the Chamonix valley. The Grands Montets is always the first area to open in December and the last to shut in May.
Beautifully decorated/renovated and tastefully furnished duplex, beside Grand Montets ski lifts and Argentiere village. Warm and cosy atmosphere, sleeps six with room for two more on comfortable sofa-bed. There is a flat screen TV, telephone (calls to be paid), 100 free channels and fast speed WIFI.
Packed with bars, clubs and restaurants, Chamonix has something for everyone; from The Clubhouse - a boutique hotel and member's bar, sister to Milk and Honey of London and New York – to Monkey bar, for some very down to earth happy hour deals. Not even Val d’Isere can rival Cham for the number and variety of evening entertainments on offer. But Chamonix also has beautiful old architecture, crammed with mountaineering history, and it is a fully functional town rather than a ‘ski resort’ in the normal sense.

Although a little out of town proper, Les Bossons is well served by both bus and train routes. It also now benefits from the excellent Vert Bar, which sees many people going out of Chamonix for the Vert’s packed events calendar. Typically you get a little more for your money in Les Bossons and a slightly calmer pace of life, to be weighed against the occasional inconvenience of getting into town.
Les Houches is home to the Kandahar World Cup and with its tree lined pistes, the ski area is a local favourite on bad visibility days. It is a great base from which to explore, for those with cars, and the fastest run to Geneva (around an hour), but can be a little laborious to get to the other ski areas if relying on the bus, as a change is usually required. Les Houches has the feel of a traditional Alpine village, and much loved by many loyal devotees.
